Going way back in Grateful Dead iconography, master artist Rick Griffin first used the scarab beetle on the Aoxomoxoa album cover design in 1969. He developed the image further and used it again on the pages of the classic underground comic, ZAP in 1970. I first saw the scarab icon used in ancient Egyptian art and always liked it depicted with wings as it makes the whole geometry of the design work better for me personally. Hey all art, like reality, is subjective. I had forgotten about this image until I found a crude line drawing of it in an online clip art service. I’ve redesigned it here to perfect the symmetry and gave it some more graceful wings. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
